Mise-en-scene in thrillers

·         Mise-en-scene is a French word.

·         It means ‘having put into scene’

·         A term used to describe the visual elements in a single frame/shot.

Visual elements seen in films:

·         Camera angles

·         Lighting

·         Props

·         Costume

·         Shot composition

·         Facial expression

·         Setting/Location

·         Characters/Actors

·         Movement/Performance

·         Shadow

·         Colour

·         Visual effects (SFX)

Why is mis-en-scene important?

·         Distinguish the genre.

·         Make it look authentic.

·         You understand more about the characters.

·         Some directors use Mis-en-scene to create their own style e.g. Quentin Tarantino –Auteur  (Artistic Director).
